If the story and game worldвЂ™s third rate, well, just ask any World of Warcraft or StarCraft player how much theyвЂ™re playing those games for the complex characterization and sophisticated narrative. ThatвЂ™s the mark of clever game designвЂ“it keeps you clicking.

I enjoyed both my runs through Fable III, the second less than the first, but then itвЂ™s kind of like Diablo where you know itвЂ™s dumb but you canвЂ™t help yourself. Two weapons? One attack? Performing the same expression hundreds of times to get the same reaction from the same cardboard citizens? Sure, that stuff can be tedious in games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age if youвЂ™re not into it, but come on. If Lionhead makes Fable IV any more casual, theyвЂ™ll have to switch to Flash and start pimping it through a browser. Or the simplified expressions, just two or three at a time, with zero chance of failure, unlike Fable IIвЂ™s at least modestly challenging timed-button mini-game. Or your вЂњhammers or swordsвЂќ arsenal, missing Fable IIвЂ™s katanas, cleavers, cutlasses, axes, and maces (if thereвЂ™s too much overlap, make them unique somehow, donвЂ™t just cut them out and emasculate the entire worldвЂ™s armory). Like the mashy one-button combat, shorn of Fable IIвЂ™s elegant combo chains and counterattacks, which at least made spamming the button thousands of times interesting. And knowing it, I canвЂ™t help but feel heвЂ™s tried to dumb down Fable III anyway, presumably to access a broader audience. And while the setting remains the same, the looks have definitely changed. The game still takes place in the land of Albion. In that time, Lionhead Studios put in a good bit of work to make the sequel look substantially better. A two-year gap separates Fable II from Fable III. Great as its gameplay was, BioShockвЂ™s was legendarily awful.Д«ut yes, I really was expecting more, because Peter Molyneux knows all that stuff.
